Description
This barn, located 30 meters west of Malting Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century and features four bays. It is constructed from timber framing and is weatherboarded, topped with a thatched roof. On the north side, there is a gabled porch from the 18th century, situated at the second bay from the west end. The barn retains much of its original 16th-century framing, characterized by heavy studding and prominent windbracing of both arch and tension types. The open trusses include tiebeams, mostly without archbraces, although one tiebeam has been renewed. The roof is a good example of a clasped purlin design, with some bays also windbraced. The walls are partly underbuilt with 19th and 20th-century brick, and some areas of studwork are missing from the westernmost bay. Despite these alterations, it remains a largely complete example of a 16th-century barn. Malting Farmhouse itself is not a listed building.
