Description

Pantiles is a house dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th century and late 18th century. It features a hall and service cells typical of a three-cell open hall house. The building has two storeys, although it was originally one storey with attics until around 1800. It is constructed with timber framing and plaster, with the south gable encased in 19th-century red brick and the north gable partly covered in weatherboarding. The roof is covered with Roman pantiles.

A red brick chimney, dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, runs along the axial line of the house. The first storey has three-light 18th-century casements with leaded lights, while the ground floor features mid-20th-century casements. There is a gabled entrance porch from the 19th or 20th century with a boarded door. Inside, the open hall has heavy close-studding characteristic of the 15th century, with a dais beam at the upper end that includes a suite of mouldings and bold embattling. The posts from the original open truss remain, although the truss itself has been removed. One of the service rooms contains roughly-formed unchamfered floor joists.

In the late 16th century, a wide open fireplace was added, backing onto the cross-entry, which was remodelled in the 20th century. An upper floor with chamfered floor joists was inserted into the hall at that time. Around 1800, the external walls were raised by about a metre, and a new roof was constructed at a lower pitch. The parlour cell that once stood at the right end of the house was also removed.
