Description
The stables, located 40 meters east of Grove Farmhouse, date from the late 17th century and feature a hayloft above. The structure consists of two cells and is approximately four bays wide. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a corrugated iron roof that was formerly thatched. The stables have boarded 19th-century stable doors, including one leading to the hayloft in the north gable. The framing is of good quality for its period, showcasing primary-braced studding with a middle rail, and includes several original openings that have since been blocked. The roof is a two-tier butt-purlin design, with the upper tier windbraced. The loft floor has floor joists set on edge, and remnants of hayracks and mangers can still be seen. A boarded partition features interesting graffiti from the 18th century or possibly the 17th century, including two interlace patterns and numerous fork designs.
