Description
The stables at Grove Farm, located approximately 45 metres north of Grove Farmhouse, date from the late 16th century and have been altered in the 19th and late 20th centuries. The building features a combination of timber framing encased in brick and weatherboarding on the southwest side, with brick infill on the northeast. It has an old tiled gabled roof and a rectangular plan consisting of ten framed bays, three of which are currently used as a cottage.
The southwest front has a weatherboarded first floor and a brick ground floor. The cottage section on the left includes 20th-century wooden casement windows: three 2-light windows on the first floor, along with one 4-light, one 2-light, and one 3-light window on the ground floor. There is a part-glazed door between the 2-light and 3-light windows, and wooden garage doors are located under the fourth window on the first floor. The right-hand section is irregular, featuring two stable doors and two window openings in between. The door on the right has a hay loading door above it, with one window opening to its right.
Inside, the stables contain large plain joists, two moulded principal beams, and two other principal beams with chamfers and lamb tongue stops. The roof structure includes a queen post design with clasped purlins and curved braces. There is also a three-bay 19th-century brick extension on the right, which has a lower roof height and is of no special interest.
