Description
Deep Meadows is a cottage that has been converted into a house. It dates from the mid-16th century and has undergone alterations and extensions in the 19th and mid-20th centuries. The building features a combination of timber framing and painted brick, topped with old tile gabled roofs. It has an L-plan layout with three framed bays and an extension on the north side, standing two storeys high. There are four chimneys with offset heads and clay pots.
The garden front, facing south, has a chimney at each gable end and one on the ridge. The timber frame is exposed, showcasing some later timbers. On the first floor, there are five windows, while the ground floor features four windows, one of which on the left does not have glazing bars. A central plank door is now disused.
On the north front, the timber frame is also exposed. There is one small window on the first floor and two three-light windows on the ground floor. A wing projecting northwards has one bay of visible timber frame on the left with a two-light window on each floor. To the right of this are two 20th-century four-light oriel windows on the first floor, with small windows to the left. The entrance features a plain 20th-century door with a small glazed panel, accompanied by a two-light window on the left and two 20th-century windows to the right.
Inside, some of the timber frame is exposed. The floor joists in one framed bay are plain and large, while others are chamfered with shield stops. The principal beam in this bay has similar chamfers and stops, with a large shaped bracket at each end. There is an inglenook chimney with a large oak lintel that has carving on its face, located in the drawing room.
