Description

Poplar Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century. It has two storeys and features a three-cell lobby entrance plan. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a slated roof from the 19th century. An axial chimney, rebuilt in the 19th century, is made of red brick with gault brick quoins. The windows are early 19th century small-pane casements. The entrance porch, also from the early 19th century, is gabled with a slated roof and a six-panelled door.

A rear service wing was added in the early 19th century, constructed of gault brick with a slated roof, featuring two storeys and two windows. The first storey has horizontally-sliding small-pane casements, while the ground floor has casements with segmental heads. An open porch in the re-entrant angle has a swept sheet-metal roof.

Inside, the hall displays some heavy exposed framing from the mid 16th century, with main beams that have broad chamfers and large unchamfered floor joists. There is a wide lintelled open fireplace with piers made of limestone blocks, likely sourced from the Abbey of St Edmundsbury after its dissolution in 1539. These blocks exhibit shafts that appear to be from the 12th or 13th century. The rest of the timber framing is mostly concealed.
