Description
The Thurston War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made from blue Forest of Dean stone and stands prominently on the western boundary of the churchyard of the Church of St Peter, facing Church Road.
The memorial features a Celtic wheel-head cross with a tapering shaft, set on a square two-stepped plinth with a single-stepped base. The arms of the cross are adorned with relief-carved interlace. The memorial reaches approximately 2.7 meters in height.
The main inscription is incised and painted in black on the lower step of the plinth, which reads on the west face: “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE” followed by the years 1914 with one name, 1915 with two names, 1916 with three names, 1917 with one name, 1918 with five names, and on the east face, 1919 with one name. It is dedicated: “ERECTED IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THURSTON/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY.”
Additionally, there is an inscription on the west face of the cross shaft that states: “IN/ MEMORY/ OF/ THOSE WHO/ GAVE THEIR/ LIVES DURING/ 1939 – 1945.” Nine more names are incised on the upper step of the plinth.
