Description
Grove Farm is a mid-16th century farmhouse that underwent significant remodelling in the 1919. The building is timber-framed and now largely encased in red brick dating to 1919. It has a plaintiled roof and two rear chimneys, one from the late 16th/early 17th century with diagonally-set square flues, constructed with pink/buff bricks from around 1580-1620; the other from around 1600-1650, with a sawtooth shaft of red brick. The farmhouse has two storeys and three windows.
The external features are from 1919, including small-pane casements and a pair of bay windows at ground level. A plaintiled roof continues over the entrance to form a porch, sheltering a six-panelled door with the upper four panels glazed. Before the 1919 remodelling, the house consisted of a cross-wing to the right, a cross-entry to the centre, and a hall range to the left, which was likely truncated. The room at the front of the cross-wing displays good exposed framing from around 1550. The first floor was originally jettied at the gable and featured carved shafts with moulded capitals, which are now located internally. Beneath the jetty, there was an oriel window and sidelights. Blocked cavetto-moulded mullioned windows are present in two walls. Inside, there are good unchamfered floor joists laid flat. Three rooms have lintelled open fireplaces. The remaining framing is largely concealed, and the roof was entirely rebuilt in 1919. The building is included on the list due to the presence of high-quality features from the 16th and early 17th centuries.
