Description

The White House is a former farmhouse that dates back to the 16th century, with significant alterations made in the early 17th century. It was refronted in 1910, as indicated on the building. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with parts encased in red brick, which is now painted. The roof is thatched and features several red brick chimneys, one of which from the early 17th century has pilasters on the sides and a moulded string near the base. The building mainly has large-pane sash windows from 1910, and the entrance door is a four-panelled design set back in a single-storey extension.

The core of the building likely originates from the mid-16th century, showcasing arch-braced close-studding and unchamfered floor joists, along with evidence of diamond-mullioned windows. The major remodelling in the early 17th century included the addition of principals and two tiers of butt-purlins to the coupled-rafter roof, with the upper tier being wind-braced. Attics were inserted, and the earlier joists were given chamfers with ornate stops. Inside, there are back-to-back parlour and chamber fireplaces featuring flat chamfered heads and original hearths. A notable early 17th-century plaster ceiling displays vinescroll friezes and large cartouches with central pendant motifs. Additionally, there is a late 17th-century dog-leg staircase with heavy balustrading and barley-sugar twist balusters, along with some bolection-moulded joinery from around 1700.
