Description

The Grange is a house built in two main phases, the early 16th century and late 16th century. It is two storeys high. The house is timber-framed and plastered, with the timber framing exposed along the upper front elevation, and plaster infill in between. The framing is close-studding, with exposed joist-ends showing evidence of a formerly jettied upper floor along the front of both phases. The second phase, to the left, is distinguished by ogee-curved arch wind-braces. The roof is covered with concrete plain tiles, and features an axial chimney dating from about 1600 with flattened hexagonal shafts made of red brick. The windows are mainly 20th-century casements with transoms. A 19th-century six-panelled entrance door is set within a 20th-century architrave designed in the style of the 18th century. A late 20th-century, plain-tiled, gabled timber-framed entrance porch is present.

The early 16th-century section on the right is a three-bay parlour cross-wing and has heavy, unmoulded framing with an altered crownpost roof. One crownpost is of cross-quadrate form with broach-stops. A small integral wing to the right has an exposed, moulded gable tie-beam. Several blocked diamond-mullioned windows are present. The hall range was rebuilt in the late 16th century, also with heavy, unmoulded framing. It contains one lintelled hall fireplace and another with a plastered arch in a chamber. Several blocked roll-and-cavetto moulded mullioned windows are present. The roof is a 2-tier butt-purlin roof with wind-bracing.
