Description

Duncons is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a single house, originally built in the early 17th century and later remodeled in the 19th century to create two cottages. It underwent renovation in the early 1970s. The building is timber framed and rendered, with a roof made of concrete plain tiles. It consists of two cells and shows evidence of additional work to the west, indicating it may have originally been built against the now-missing service end of an adjacent house.

The structure is two storeys tall with an attic and features a projecting gable on the east side. Notably, it retains four original projecting upper windows, each with four lights, ovolo-moulded mullions, and a transom. There is a similar window in the east gable end that was replaced in the 1980s. The other windows are small-paned casements from the 1970s. A central gabled porch on the north side has a boarded door with cover battens. Inside, there are two 19th-century internal stacks with cross-axial shafts.

In the 18th century, a Quaker chapel was attached to the north of the house, which remained until the late 19th century. The interior features a fully exposed frame, with the parlour showcasing fine close studding and plain ceiling joists. The hall has more altered studding and an intact ceiling with chamfered joists. The original upper ceilings have plain joists, and the original stack was removed in the 19th century, replaced by two smaller stacks, one of which intrudes into the parlour cell. The intact roof includes a single row of clasped purlins with two-way wind bracing.
