MENDLESHAM OAK FARM ROAD TM 16 SW 5/59 Oak Farmhouse -

-- II Farmhouse. C16-early C17. Unmodernised and largely unaltered since C19. A large house in 3 main sections: (i) a short central range with cross-wing to right; (ii) a larger recessed range to right of cross-wing; (iii) a service cross-wing to left. Timber framed and plastered, with remains of old chevron- pargetted panelled plasterwork. Plaintiled roof except service wing which is roofed in corrugated iron. 2 storeys and attic. Central cross-wing has overhanging gable. Mainly C19 sash windows with glazing bars. Various casements in service wing. Right section has 2 doorways with 6-panel and plank doors. One flat-roofed dormer. 2 heavy stacks, one internal, one at right gable end, each with the moulded bases of 3 in-line octagonal shafts, the upper portions reconstructed as one in C19. Interior. A little plain studding in one upper room, the timbers otherwise largely concealed. Roof of main cross-wing has clasped and butt purlins. Service wing to left, probably the oldest part, has a queen-post roof, mostly concealed.
