Description
Fir Tree Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with a 17th-century service cross-wing added to the right. The building was altered in 1916 after a fire that destroyed the roof. The cross-wing was reduced to one storey in the mid-20th century. It has a timber frame, with the front encased in common brick that is dated 1916 and features the initials 'D.K.' on the porch, while the rear is rendered. The roof is covered with pantiles. The farmhouse consists of three cells and is two storeys high, with three windows that are three-light casements, mostly from the 19th century, set under flat concrete lintels. There is a lobby entry with a gabled porch and a semi-glazed panelled door. An internal stack is present, and two ovolo-mullioned windows have been exposed at the rear of the parlour cell.
Inside, there is much plain studding with no visible bracing, and evidence suggests that many sections of mid rail have been removed, indicating possible reconstruction. A blocked cross-entry doorway is also noted. In the hall, there is an axial floor beam with large barred stop-chamfers and plain joists. The cross-passage features a similar but structurally separate ceiling, with the axial floor beam bar-stopped at one end. The service partition has been removed, and the original upper floor in the parlour cell was destroyed in 1916. A 19th-century newel stair is located by the stack.
