Description
Hawkins Farmhouse is a farmhouse with a 16th-century core, a service cell that likely dates to 1729 (as indicated by a plaque in the roof space), and an 18th-century rear wing. The building is timber framed and was cased in grey brick around 1900, featuring a pantiled roof. The rear wing is partly brick-cased and partly rendered, topped with a later shallow-pitched roof made of concrete pantiles. The farmhouse consists of three cells and is two storeys high, with three windows that have small-paned casements of two and three lights, all set under flat gauged brick arches. The lobby entrance includes a six-panel door, with the upper two panels being glazed, and is flanked by a gabled porch from around 1900, which has scalloped bargeboards and a semi-circular arched entrance. A stack is positioned in the central part of the rear roof slope of the rear wing.
Inside, most of the timberwork is concealed. The stack is inserted into one end of the parlour cell, but it is unclear where the original heating was located. The parlour ceiling features plastered cross-beams, while the hall has a chamfered axial bridging beam. The service cell contains square joists and shows evidence of an axial partition. There is a cambered tie beam at the upper end of the hall, and a 19th-century newel stair is located in front of the stack. The roof has not been examined.
