Description

Hall Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with possibly earlier work at the service end. The building features a main range with a parlour cross-wing to the right. It is constructed from timber framing and rendered, topped with a pantiled roof. The farmhouse consists of three cells and is two storeys high. Most of the windows are casement windows from the late 19th century. At the right of the main range, where it meets the wing, there is a lobby entrance with a late 19th century four-panel door and a plain overlight. The stack has an axial red brick shaft, and there is a small 19th century stack on the left gable end. At the rear, there is a one-storey lean-to with flint rubble walls and a pantiled roof.

Inside, the frame is mostly concealed, except at the service end where the walls have been raised about 1.5 meters, revealing widely-spaced studs below the old wallplate. The hall and parlour ceilings feature chamfered main beams, with the joists concealed. There is a massive lintel over a blocked hall fireplace, and a newel stair located behind the stack. The cross-wing has a three-bay queen-post roof, although some of the braces are missing. The tie beams that originally supported the queen-posts were removed around 1600 when an ovolo-moulded cross-beamed ceiling was added, causing the queen-posts to now rest on sleepers on the attic floor joists. The roof over the main range appears to have been reconstructed at a later date.
