Description
Pear Tree Cottage is a house that was formerly two cottages, likely built in the 17th century using earlier timbers and later remodeled in the 18th century. It underwent renovations in the mid-20th century, including a rear addition from the 1970s. The cottage is timber framed and rendered, with a pantiled roof. It consists of two cells and has two storeys. The windows are mid-20th century casements with square-leaded panes, and the entrance features a boarded door with a gabled hood. The chimney stack was rebuilt in the mid-20th century.
Inside, there are two bays to the right of the stack, featuring heavy main posts with deep jowls and good studding, which shows evidence of former diamond-mullioned windows. The section against the stack is framed as an end wall and has signs of an upper window. There is a cambered open tie beam with missing braces. The ground floor has a ceiling with chamfered joists and a massive floor beam. The left cell has plain studding and a lower quality floor with irregular on-edge joists. The chimney stack is made of large bricks, likely from the later 18th century. The roof has side purlins with plank wind bracing, although most of the timbers are concealed.
