Description
Whitehouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and mid 20th century. The building has two storeys and features a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan. It is timber framed and plastered, with a concrete tiled roof that was originally thatched until the 20th century. A 20th-century axial chimney made of red brick is present. The ground floor has 20th-century casements, while the upper floor features 19th-century casements. The entrance door is panelled and has a gabled porch supported by posts. The farmhouse displays good close studwork with arch wind-bracing and a coupled-rafter roof. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a lintel in the parlour on the left side. Evidence suggests there were twin service room doorways, and part of a moulded head from a plank-and-muntin cross-passage screen has been reused in a partition. The parlour was extended to the left by one bay in the 17th century. Until the mid 20th century, there was a detached range that included a bakehouse, dairy, and kitchen, which stood at an angle to the service end of the house.
