Description

Larters is a house with a core dating back to the 15th century, which underwent significant remodelling around 1550 to 1570 and further changes in the early 19th century. The building has two storeys and features a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped by a slated roof from the 19th century that includes a central red brick chimney. The windows are metal casements installed around 1980, and there is a mid-20th century panelled entrance door located in a gabled porch at the lobby entrance.

Inside, part of the original 15th-century open hall remains, showcasing close-studded walls and a cambered tiebeam that was once supported by massive archbraces at the open truss. In the early to mid-16th century, an upper floor was added to the hall, featuring a heavy bar-stop chamfered bridging joist and an open fireplace with a very deep cambered lintel. Around 1550, a new parlour block was constructed, with well-preserved exposed ceilings in the parlour and chamber that display double-ogee moulded beams and roll-moulded joists. In the 19th century, the roof was rebuilt, and an outshut was added to the rear. Additionally, the original 15th-century service cell was demolished at some point and not replaced. The building is included in the heritage register despite its 19th and 20th-century alterations due to the extensive and high-quality work from the 16th century.
