Description

Water Run Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from around 1600, which incorporates part of a late 15th century or early 16th century house. The building has two storeys and features a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan. It is constructed from timber framing and plastered, topped with a thatched roof that has a red brick axial chimney. The windows are small-pane casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, and there is a boarded entrance door.

To the left of the main structure is a substantial two-bay 15th century solar cross-wing, characterized by massive framing, arch-braced studwork, and a blocked diamond-mullioned window, with evidence of others that had square mullions. The upper floor joists are very heavy and unchamfered. There is a blocked doorway that once had an arched head, which led into a hall that was located to the left of the current house. The open truss features a strongly cambered arch-braced tie-beam. Originally, the roof was of coupled-rafter form, but it was replaced with a butt-purlin roof in the 18th century. The front gable of the wing was originally jettied.

Around 1600, new hall and parlour cells were constructed with good plain framing, featuring close-studding and a side-purlin roof. The earlier wing subsequently became the service cell, and in the 18th century, the coupled-rafter roof was replaced by a butt-purlin roof to align with the main range.
