Description
Oak Cottage is a house built in two stages, during the mid 16th century and around 1600. It has a two-cell end-chimney plan and stands two storeys high. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, with a pantiled roof that was likely originally thatched. There are external chimneys at both gables: a 16th or 17th century stack made of plastered brick on the right, which was recapped in the 20th century, and a 19th century stack of red brick on the left. The windows are 19th and 20th century casements, some featuring 20th century leaded lights. The entrance door is boarded and battened, dating from the 20th century. The framing is fully exposed, with the hall on the right showcasing heavy unchamfered joists and an open fireplace with a cambered lintel. Around 1600, the service cell on the left was enlarged, featuring chamfered floor joists and a clasped-purlin roof.
