Description
The Cricketers is a house that was once a public house, with a date of "1630 T.T." carved on the tie-beam of the left-hand gable. It has a three-cell plan, with both end cells featuring gabled cross-wings. The entrance is through a cross-passage, and there may have been a lobby entrance in the past. The building has two storeys and attics, and is constructed of timber framing with roughcast. The gable tie-beams of the end cells oversail and feature ovolo-mouldings and carved pendants at either end. The roofs are plaintiled, and there is an original axial chimney made of red brick with a central pilaster on the shaft. The house includes one gabled casement dormer and 19th and 20th-century small-pane casements. There is a 20th-century glazed entrance door set in an 18th-century doorway with a pulvinated cornice, along with a 20th-century open porch supported by enriched posts. Inside, there is a good original dogleg stair in a small rear central staircase tower, featuring heavy turned balusters and moulded newels and handrails. The main beams are ovolo-moulded, and close-studwork and other framing features are exposed. The cross-passage is located within the service cell.
