Description

Limes Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century, located in Stonham Earl. It has a timber-frame structure that is plastered and colourwashed, with wattle and daub infill. The roof is thatched with long straw and features a catslide at the rear, along with a central brick ridge stack. The house follows a 2-unit lobby-entry plan and includes an outshut at the rear. It is a single storey with an attic and has a two-window range of 2-light casements, complemented by a central plank door and a small window above. The right end of the house has a 2-light casement on each floor and a plank door on the far right. The left end has a 20th-century single-storey extension with a 2-light casement in the attic above.

Inside, the cottage features tall panel framing with bracing, mostly visible in the right end on the ground floor, which is covered over. Massive wall posts support chamfered bridging beams. A large stack made of narrow bricks contains blocked back-to-back fireplaces with hoods. A fragment of a winder stair remains in the lobby, alongside a later stair leading from the left-hand room. The doors are made of planks. Although only a small part of the roof is visible, wallplates, purlins, and a collar are exposed in the plastered attic. In the rear outshut, there is a brick twin bread oven. Limes Cottage is a characteristic small house of its period, retaining many original features.
