Description
Elm Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century. It features a timber frame set on a brick plinth, with white-washed stucco covering wattle and daub infill. The roof is thatched and has a brick central ridge stack. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan and is a single storey with an attic, showcasing a three-window range of two- and three-light casements. There is a gabled porch on the centre right, which includes a plank door and a fanlight. Above, there are three gabled dormers with two lights each. At the rear, there is a small outshut covered with pantiles, and a moulded-plank rear door that is likely original.
Inside, the cottage has seen little alteration. Narrow panel flaming is visible throughout the space. There are back-to-back brick open fireplaces with hoods, one of which has a renewed bressumer. The spine beams are stop-chamfered with bar and ogee stops, and heavy square joists are present. The doors are made of planks. The stairs divide to either side of the stack and have cupboards with plank doors underneath. The roof structure consists of a single tier of purlins and cambered collars.
