Description

Yewtree Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating back to the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. It is a one-story building with attics, and was possibly originally an open-hall house, now retaining two 16th-century rooms. The house is timber-framed and plastered, with a thatched roof. A 19th-century chimney is located axially, constructed from red brick with a diamond pattern of gault brick on its side. There are 20th-century dormers to the roof, and 20th-century small-pane casement windows. A lean-to porch with a boarded door provides access. The original hall and service cell are largely complete, with exposed timber framing. Within the hall, a cambered tie-beam is present, along with cranked arch braces, and an inserted first floor featuring heavy, unchamfered joists. The timber framing includes close-studwork with tension and arch wind-bracing. The rear gable was originally half-hipped and contains a blocked diamond-mullioned window. Large open fireplaces are located at the upper end of the hall. The original coupled rafter roof remains over the service cell but the hall roof was renewed in the 18th century. A lower 18th-century rear wing includes many smoke-blackened medieval rafters, potentially reused from the original hall. The parlour cell was added or rebuilt in the late 19th century.
