Description

Venn’s Farmhouse is a farmhouse with a core dating back to the mid-16th century, subject to alterations across several periods. The house has a double-pile plan, meaning it has two parallel rows of rooms. The original rear section largely retains timber framing and plasterwork, with some 20th-century modifications consisting of oak framing and red brick nogging. The front range was remodelled in the 19th century, and incorporates a plastered brick underbuilding. The front range has a hipped slated roof, whilst the rear range has a pantiled roof. The 19th century features small-pane sash windows on the first storey, and 20th-century small-pane casements on the ground floor, alongside some 20th-century oak diamond mullioned windows. The rear section contains unusual 16th-century features; the hall consists of a smoke bay linked to a long bay with a sleeping loft above, and the open truss connecting them is of a base-cruck form. The walls were raised and a new roof built over the rear section in the 19th century. The building is included on the heritage list despite later alterations due to the rare structural and plan form of the 16th-century range.
