Description

Oak Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century and mid 16th century, with significant alterations made in the late 17th century. It is two storeys high and has a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring late 20th century false half-timbering. The thatched roof is hipped at the right end and includes a central 17th century chimney made of red brick, along with a 19th century gabled casement dormer. The windows include 18th century casements, one on the ground floor with transoms, and other 19th century small-pane casements. The entrance door is a 17th century oak plank design with an oblong fanlight, reconstructed from 17th century ovolo mullions, and is topped by a small 20th century plain-tiled canopy.

The three cells of the house are from different periods: the parlour block on the left is from the mid 16th century, featuring heavy studwork and arch wind-bracing, with a gable that has a pair of base-crucks and tension-bracing. The roof has been altered and the upper floor was renewed in the late 17th century. The service cell on the right dates from the early 16th century or possibly the 15th century, retaining a binding joist with a heavy medieval knee. This cell has a diamond mullioned window and a clasped-purlin roof likely from the late 16th or early 17th century. The central hall was completely rebuilt in the late 17th century, featuring small-section floor-joists, a butt purlin roof, and a wide lintelled open fireplace. Additionally, there are several moulded 16th and 17th century plank doors throughout the house.
