Description
The inn sign spanning the highway immediately east of the Magpie Inn is of 17th or 18th century origin, although it has been largely or entirely renewed in the 20th century. On either side of the road, there are square posts approximately 6 meters high that support a timber beam across the road, with a diagonal brace at each corner. Atop the beam is a painted metal figure of a magpie, surrounded by wrought iron scrollwork. Below this figure hangs a sign displaying the Brewery name. It is traditionally believed that this sign was used as a gibbet for hanging highwaymen. The sign is included for its group value.
