Description

Mill Farmhouse is a former farmhouse with an early 15th-century core that has undergone alterations in the late 16th and 19th centuries. The building is two storeys high, constructed from timber framing and roughcast, topped with a pantiled roof. It features red brick chimneys, including an end chimney to the parlour from around 1600, which has a decorative diaperwork pattern made with burnt headers, and an axial chimney from the 18th or 19th century.

The farmhouse has various 19th and 20th-century casement windows, and the entrance door, which has four panels, is part of a 19th-century extension. Inside, there is a central two-bay open hall from the 15th century, with most of the upper bay intact and part of the lower bay remaining. The open truss is fully exposed, and an inserted upper floor was removed in the 20th century. It features a cambered tie-beam with massive arch-braces rising from shafts and a coupled-rafter roof that is heavily smoke-encrusted. One of the hall windows has a transom and diamond mullions in the upper light.

The doorway leading to the parlour has a four-centred arched head, and the close-studding lacks visible bracing. The parlour cell was rebuilt in the late 16th century, showcasing roll-moulded joists and an ovolo-moulded and channelled main beam. There are two lintelled fireplaces flanked by a newel staircase and garderobes on each floor, along with two doorways that have depressed arched heads. The roof features a two-tier butt-purlin design. The service cell of the 15th-century house was rebuilt in the 18th or early 19th century, incorporating original components.
