Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory that dates back to the late 15th century and is designed in the Wealden style. It has undergone alterations primarily in the late 18th century and mid-19th century. The building is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a concrete tiled roof featuring axial chimneys made of red brick from the 19th century.

The central hall area showcases small-pane late 18th-century sash windows with flush frames and architraves. The entrance door, dating from around 1800, has six panels, with the center panels fielded and the upper panels glazed. The reveals also feature fielded panels, and there is a cornice supported by flat pilasters.

Inside, the two-bay open hall retains a well-preserved smoke-blackened crownpost roof. The open truss includes an octagonal crownpost with a moulded and embattled capital, and decorative 4-way braces, with the lateral braces not morticed to the collar. Studwork is visible at both ends of the hall, featuring both arch and tension wind-bracing. Much of the original framing has been concealed or altered due to 19th-century remodeling.

The original parlour cell on the right side was demolished and rebuilt higher in the mid-19th century, now featuring plastered brick walls and small-pane sash windows. To the left, there is a 19th-century service range that has been converted into a separate dwelling known as Old Rectory Cottage, which is not considered of special interest.
