Description
Red House is a house from the mid 18th century located on Mickfield Road in Stonham Aspal. It is built of red brick with tuck pointing and features high-quality dressings in rubbed brick, including a band at the first floor and a modillion course between moulded bands beneath the eaves. The house has parapet gables and a plaintiled roof with one axial chimney and one gable chimney, both made of red brick.
The building has two storeys and six windows, with original window openings that have flat arches made of finely-gauged brick. The mid 20th century small-pane casements mimic the appearance of original sash windows. The entrance doorway, which dates from the mid 18th century, is notable for its six fielded panels, fluted pilasters, and a dentilled cornice with a pediment.
The symmetrical facade does not align well with the traditional three-cell plan of the house, suggesting that the front wall may have been re-faced and the windows repositioned within the last 50 years. This indicates that the core of the house may date back to around 1700. Additionally, a rear service wing was added around 1800, featuring similar detailing but with large casements beneath cambered arched heads.
