Description
This building is a barn located 30 meters south west of Hill Farmhouse, dating from the mid 17th century. It is primarily timber framed and mostly covered with weatherboarding, with a small section featuring tarred daub. The upper part of the west gable end is faced with 19th-century red brick, and there is a brick addition of similar age below it. The roof is covered with corrugated iron, and there are boarded cart doors on the south side.
Inside, the barn has a six-bay frame with full-height studding, except for the two bays at the west end, which have a mid rail and were originally floored. Some original wattle and daub infill remains. The cart entry is located one bay from the east end, and there is a later cross-partition in the third bay from the west. The roof is well-preserved, consisting of eleven bays with clasped and stepped butt purlins. There are two tiers of wind braces that are symmetrically arranged: those in the five west bays curve one way, while those in the five east bays curve the opposite way, leaving the center bay without wind bracing. Attached to the east is a later timber-framed range that is not of special interest.
