Description
TM 16 SE 1/152
WINSTON Pettaugh Road Barn 550 m. SW of Boundary Farmhouse (sometimes known as Pettaugh Barn)
II
Barn Late C17. Timber framed, clad in tarred weatherboards, sections of original plinth of narrow red brick. Corrugated asbestos roof. Central cart entry: porch to north-east, formerly gabled, now reduced to a lean-to; cart doors to south-west. C20 addition to south-west not of special interest, Interior. 5 bays. Heavy studding, mid rail, straight or near-straight plank-like braces halved against inside of studs (some braces missing). The 2 end bays were originally used as stables with lofts above: the posts in trusses 2 and 5 are unjowled and show mortices for floorbeams and for down braces from their heads. The associated cross-partitions were probably open at first floor level as the tie beams show no evidence for braces or studding. Trusses 3 and 4 had arched braced tie beams. All 4 open trusses now have bolted-on knees. Original cart entry on south-west side; the porch opposite is an early C18 addition. 8-bay roof with 2 rows of diminished stepped butt purlins; the 2 centre bays are mostly missing.
