Description

This barn, located 550 meters southwest of Boundary Farmhouse and sometimes referred to as Pettaugh Barn, dates from the late 17th century. It features a timber frame clad in tarred weatherboards, with sections of the original plinth made of narrow red brick. The roof is covered with corrugated asbestos. The barn has a central cart entry, with a porch to the northeast that was originally gabled but has been reduced to a lean-to, and cart doors on the southwest side. There is a 20th-century addition to the southwest that is not of special interest.

Inside, the barn consists of five bays with heavy studding, a mid rail, and straight or near-straight plank-like braces halved against the inside of the studs, although some braces are missing. The two end bays were originally used as stables with lofts above; the posts in trusses two and five are unjowled and show mortices for floorbeams and down braces from their heads. The associated cross-partitions were likely open at the first-floor level, as the tie beams show no evidence of braces or studding. Trusses three and four feature arched braced tie beams, and all four open trusses now have bolted-on knees. The original cart entry is on the southwest side, while the porch on the opposite side is an early 18th-century addition. The roof has eight bays with two rows of diminished stepped butt purlins, although the two center bays are mostly missing.
