Description
Winston Hall is a farmhouse with a core dating from the mid-16th century, which underwent significant remodelling in 1897, as noted on a terracotta plaque on the gable of the cross-wing. The building has two storeys and is primarily timber-framed, mostly encased in red brick, while the south side still shows earlier plasterwork. It features a plaintiled roof with brick crow-stepped gables and axial chimneys made of red brick. The windows are mainly large-pane sashes with cambered heads. There is a red brick entrance porch with a parapet gable, which contains a six-panelled door.
Inside, the two-bay hall boasts a massive 16th-century binding beam with a broad chamfer and roll mouldings on the underside. There is also a large altered 16th-century fireplace with a cambered lintel. The chamber above the hall features a strongly cambered tie-beam, close-studding, and a coupled rafter roof. The parlour cell at the west end likely originated from a 16th-century service cell and has plain exposed framing. A rear dairy wing was added around 1800, and a large parlour cross-wing was constructed at the east end in 1897.
