Description
Barrett's Cottage, located on Cross Green, is a house dating from the mid-16th century that underwent renovation in 1985-1986. The building features a timber frame with a rendered exterior and a pantiled roof, presenting a small three-cell layout and standing at one and a half storeys. It has two three-light casement windows and two gabled dormers, all added around 1986. There are also two original upper windows with diamond mullions, one of which is located at the rear. The entrance door is glazed and situated in the side wall of a rear lean-to. The internal stack has been rebuilt around 1986, and while the interior was not examined during the recent survey, it is noted that the frame consists of four bays with full-height studding and cranked bracing. The stack is a later addition, replacing an original timber chimney, and the roof features clasped purlins. The house is believed to be an early example of a lobby entry plan.
