Description

Two houses, located on the west side of Debenham High Street, likely began in the early 15th century and were significantly developed in the 16th century, with further extensions during the 18th and 19th centuries. The houses are timber-framed and have plastered walls with a pantiled roof. They have two storeys and originally contained four windows, featuring various old casements. A slatted opening exists at ground floor level. Modern semi-glazed doors have been added. Number 66 includes a ground-floor storage area, previously residential, accessible through large boarded doors. An internal chimney stack with a 19th-century shaft is located just to the rear of the roof ridge, and a gable stack is positioned on the right-hand side.

The living accommodation in Number 66, situated to the left of the stack, consists of two bays and features heavy, plain joists. A gable end wall on the ground floor shows heavy studding, and a central cambered tie beam is present. The wallplate shows evidence of a former diamond-mullioned window. Within the storage area, an original early 15th-century doorway with a two-centred arch remains in its original position. The former fireplace in the storage area retains its original lintol. Number 64 exhibits 18th- and 19th-century primary-braced studding on the ground floor, along with irregular, flat joists, likely re-used. The upper floor of Number 64 and the roof over both houses were not examined.
