Description

An early 15th-century house located in Debenham, with later alterations and extensions. Originally a single house, it was subsequently divided into two dwellings, numbers 10 and 11. An early 16th-century range was built adjacent to the original structure, with the earlier building adapted for use as a service room. The building was renovated in the 1970s. It is timber-framed and plastered with a pantiled roof, consisting of a 1 1/2-story medieval section and a 2-story 16th-century range. The windows are casement windows, some with a single horizontal bar to each light; the upper windows date to the 19th century and the lower ones to the mid-20th century. There are two mid-20th century semi-glazed doors. An internal stack is present in the main range, and a gable stack is to the left. Number 11 incorporates the end of an adjoining 18th-century barn, although the remainder of the barn is not of special interest. The interior of Number 10 has been modernized, but retains exposed studding in the rear wall, including two diamond-mullioned windows that have been opened out. A 16th-century chamfered floorbeam is visible, with the joists concealed. A newel stair is positioned behind the stack. The medieval section, which originally comprised a hall and a service room, has been extensively modernised, and little of the original structure is visible; a two-centre arched doorway is believed to be concealed behind plaster. The interior of Number 11 was not inspected, but it is understood that the timbers are largely concealed.
