Description
The Chestnuts is a house with a core dating back to the 15th century, featuring significant alterations from the 16th to early 17th centuries, including the addition of a northern cell. The building is timber framed and rendered, topped with a pantiled roof. It consists of three cells and stands two storeys high. The house has various casement windows, primarily from the 20th century. To the left, there is a mid-20th century semi-glazed door and an enclosed porch, while a glazed door is located at the centre. An internal stack has a rendered shaft.
Inside, the earlier work is evident in two bays, although the original layout is unclear. The upper floor showcases some good framing with arched wall braces. The south gable end features a straight tie beam brace but lacks evidence of studding, indicating that the house may have originally extended further. The stack is inserted into part of the south bay. The centre bay has plain joists with original trimming for a stair, while the north bay, dating from the early 17th century, has most of its timbers concealed. The south bay has a heavily sooted queen-post roof, whereas the remainder of the roof features clasped purlins with much later reinforcement and renewal, showing no signs of sooting.
