Description
Timbers is a former farmhouse that consists of two main sections: a 15th-century range that runs parallel to the road and a late 16th or early 17th-century two-cell cross-wing to the right. There is also a small addition at the rear of the cross-wing. The building is primarily timber-framed, mostly encased in 19th-century red brick and colourwashed at the front, while the rear is plastered. It features pantiled roofs and stands two storeys tall with an attic in the cross-wing. The windows are mainly mid-20th-century casements with diamond-leaded glass, and there is a 20th-century door. The older range has a gable stack, while the cross-wing has an internal stack. The 15th-century range has been significantly altered but originally included an open hall and a service cell, with moulded and embattled beams at each end of the hall, including evidence of service doorways at the lower end. Much of the original 15th-century structure is no longer visible, and the open truss and original roof have been lost. A 16th-century inserted floor features a bridging beam with multiple mouldings and slightly chamfered heavy joists. The cross-wing remains largely intact, complete with newel stairs and a first-floor arched brick fireplace.
