Description
Tiptofts Farmhouse is a former farmhouse, now divided into two separate residences. It dates from the late 16th century and comprises a main range and a cross-wing. The construction is timber-framed, with the cross-wing roughcast and the main range featuring old render with traces of decorative comb pargetting, and some replacement brick to the ground floor. The roof is covered with old plaintiles. The farmhouse is two storeys high, with attics in the cross-wing. Upper floor windows are 19th century three-light casements with glazing bars, while the ground floor has similar, larger windows with transoms. There is a plank front door. The cross-wing has a two-light attic window and a small gabled dormer in the outer roof slope. A 20th-century half-glazed entrance door leads to a small, enclosed, and gabled porch. The building's ranges have internal chimney stacks with tall, plain red brick shafts; the one in the main range is very narrow and runs across the ridge of the roof. The interior of the main range was not inspected but is reportedly long and likely to be of varying dates. The cross-wing follows a three-bay lobby entrance form, including the chimney bay. A newel staircase is situated beside the chimney stack. Main beams are visible in the ground-floor rooms to the left of the stack, featuring an ovolo moulding with cut-off stops, and to the right, with a chamfer and scroll stops. The attics are currently inaccessible.
