Description

The forge and attached stables, located to the southwest of the Old Forge, date from the early 19th century. They are constructed of red brick and weather-boarded timber-frame on a moulded brick plinth, with a slate roof over the forge and adjoining stable, and a pantile roof over the stable beyond. The forge features two brick stacks, one of which is truncated, and is a single storey.

The forge has a front window with shutters and eight narrow lights made of lapped glass. There are stable doors at either end, with a small window in the left gable. A door on the right leads to an open-fronted traverse with a brick floor and partly timber-framed walls. The close studding is made of light scantling with long angle braces. The stable beyond has double doors, and a further stable to the far right has a door and projects forward. The rear of the stables includes additional doorways.

Inside, the remarkably unaltered forge retains two hearths—one with intact bellows and the other with bellows disconnected on one side—along with various fixed benches, shelves, and machinery. The stables have brick floors and close studded framing of light scantling, with low-pitched roofs featuring clasped purlins and collars. These buildings are little altered and form a cohesive group with The Old Forge and Willowside.
