Description

Bluegates Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 17th century and serves as a crosswing to an 18th-century house, with 19th and 20th-century additions and alterations. The building features a timber-framed rendered range, partly covered in painted brick, with the rest in painted brick laid in Flemish bond. It has plain tile roofs and an L-shaped plan, comprising a three-bay crosswing on the right and additions on the left and rear.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with an attic and cellar. The 18th-century range has five bays, with a central early 20th-century glazed porch flanked by canted bays that contain plate glass sashes. The first floor has 12-pane sashes, and there is a cornice along the top. Two gabled dormers with bargeboards and casements are present, along with an end stack on the left. The crosswing is built on a brick base and has a single-storey extension added to the rear gable end. It features a steeply-pitched roof with bargeboards at the gable and a former external stack on the left side, now part of the 19th-century extension.

Inside the crosswing, the framing is exposed at the first floor level, showcasing chamfered jowled hall posts and an ovolo-mounted tie beam. There is a pegged long diagonal down brace to the studded wall, while the spine beam and transverse beam are plastered over. The roof has clasped purlins and a very steep stair leads to the front gable end room. The 18th-century range includes a closed-string staircase with square newels, column-on-vase balusters, and a moulded handrail.
