Description

TM 13 NW WHERSTEAD A137 (west side, off) 3/15 Bluegates Farmhouse II Farmhouse. Probable C17 range forming crosswing to C18 house with C19 and C20 additions and alterations. Timber-framed rendered range, partly cased in painted brick. Otherwise painted brick in Flemish bond. Plain tile roofs. L-shaped plan with 3-bay crosswing to right and additions to left and rear. 2 storeys, attic and cellar. C18 range: 5 bays with central early C20 glazed porch flanked by canted bays with plate glass sashes. 12-pane sashes to first floor. Cornice. 2 gabled dormers with bargeboards and casements. End stack to left. Crosswing is underbuilt in brick and has a single-storey later extension to rear gable end. Steeply-pitched roof, bargeboards to gable. Former external stack to left side, now incorporated into C19 extension. Interior: crosswing, framing exposed at 1st floor level, chamfered jowled hall posts, ovolo-mounted tie beam. Pegged long diagonal down brace to studded wall. Spine beam and transverse beam plastered over. Clasped purlin roof. Very steep stair to front gable end room. C18 range: closed-string staircase with square newels, column-on-vase balusters and moulded handrail.
