Description
Thorington Hall is a house that likely dates back to the early 16th century, with 18th century and later additions and alterations. It features a timber-framed structure with a brick gable wall on the right and is rendered. The roof is covered with plain tiles, and there is an orange brick stack. The original range consists of three bays, with a cross wing added to the rear and a later addition on the right that replaced an earlier structure. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a cellar in part of it. There is an off-centre 20th century porch at the entrance. The front has three windows, including 20-pane sash windows on the ground floor and a small 20th century casement window to the left of the door. The first floor has small-paned casements. A large external stack is located on the left gable, and there is a ridge stack on the right. At the rear is a late 18th to early 19th century wing with a bow that contains 20-pane sashes.
Inside, the left section reveals three bays of framing with stout scantlings. On the ground floor, there are chamfered jowled posts and deep chamfered beams with tenoned-in joists. The inglenook fireplace has a replaced bressumer. There is an 18th century corner cupboard with shaped shelves, fluted pilasters, and a moulded archivolt. The first floor features jowled posts and cambered tie beams with arch braces. The wall plate displays an edge-halved and bridled scarf joint. The end wall of the early 16th century section on the right is studded with tension bracing and shows a former doorway, indicating an earlier range at the site of the 18th century addition. The attic floor appears to have been inserted, and the roof features an unmoulded, unbraced crown post.
