Description
Blacksmiths Cottage is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. It likely dates from the 15th to early 16th century, with a probable 16th-century cross wing and later alterations and additions. The building is timber-framed, with pebbledash panels and a brick extension to the cross wing, and it features plain tile roofs. The structure is L-shaped, comprising a single-storey and attic range alongside a two-storey cross wing to the left, which has a later extension at the rear. The single-storey range may have originally been an open hall.
The cottage has two cells and a board door to the left, with three small-paned casements on the ground floor and two gabled dormers above, both with similar windows and bargeboards. The roof is steeply pitched and swept, with a large, off-centre stack. The cross wing juts out at the front and has a small-paned casement on each floor, along with bargeboards on the gable. There is an external stack on the left return, with its upper part rebuilt in 20th-century brick. Access to the extension is through a 20th-century porch.
Although the interior has not been fully inspected, the earlier range features a beamed ceiling, with most of the framing concealed. The end wall at the first floor level displays jowled posts and a tie beam with arched braces, along with wall studding. The roof includes a side purlin.
