Description
24 and 26 Market Street is a pair of houses that have been combined into one. They date from the 17th century, with an early 19th-century brick front. The original structure is likely timber-framed and features pantiled roofs. The building has an L-shaped plan and is two stories high, with a brick facade that was originally made up of two one-bay houses, each with a door on the right side; the door for number 24 is now blocked.
The nearly central entrance has a six-panelled door beneath a six-vaned fanlight in a rectangular frame. The windows are mostly tripartite sashes, except for the right ground-floor window, which has been replaced with plate glass, and another ground-floor window that lacks horizontal glazing bars. The eaves cornice is paired and bracketed, sitting below a gabled roof.
At the back, there is an outshut that overlaps with a two-story rear wing, which has three bays. The left bay features a three-light late 18th-century casement on both floors, while the right bay has a two-light 18th-century casement on the first floor; the other windows are from the 20th century. The rear wing has a gabled roof with a late 20th-century sloping dormer and includes a further two-story and dormer attic extension to the south. No chimney stacks are visible, and the rear elements are all made of whitewashed brick.
