Description
18 and 20 Market Street is a pair of shops dating from the late 16th century, featuring a timber frame with an early 19th-century brick exterior and a mid-19th-century double-fronted plate-glass shop front on the right. The building has two storeys and a pantiled roof, which is black glazed at the front. The shop front includes prominent stop brackets supporting the fascia board, with an entrance to chambers located to the left of the display window. There is one tripartite sash window to the left of the entrance and two similar windows on the first floor. The roof is gabled with an internal gable-end stack on the east side.
Inside, the ground floor showcases cruciform chamfered bridging beams with tongue stops. The first floor features jowled principal studs and additional cruciform chamfered bridging beams. There are several late 17th-century two-panel doors with HL hinges, and the roof structure includes clasped purlins with curved windbraces.
