Description

Hill Farmhouse is a late 17th-century L-plan farmhouse with an early 19th-century south wing extension. It is constructed of colourwashed brick and features a pantiled roof. The facade is two-storeys high with a disused attic and consists of three bays. The entrance was originally located in the central bay. Ground floor windows have segmental arches with rubbed brick voussoirs above them, and the window frames have been restored with mullions and transoms. The building has a moulded brick cornice and rusticated brick quoins, along with steeply pitched roofs. The north facade has been rebuilt and includes a 19th-century moulded brick finial at the northeast angle. The west gable features a blocked window leading into the roof space, which may still have its original mullion. The early 19th-century extension has a saw-tooth cornice and casement windows, while all rear windows are from the late 20th century. The original 17th-century roof includes staggered butt-purlins, collar and tie beams, with two trusses in the west wing supported by wall posts on the south side only. An original winding stair between the corridor and the stack on the facade side rises two storeys and has a four-facetted jewel cap on the top newel. Most principal beams are visible, and while the original stack remains, the fireplace has been modernized.
