Description
The Church of St. Peter is a Grade I listed building located on Easton Dereham Road. It dates from the late 12th century, with additions from the 13th and 15th centuries. The church underwent repairs in the 18th century and was restored in 1883 by R.M. Phipson. Its construction features partially rendered flint with stone dressings and some brick repairs, topped with pantile and slate roofs. A former tower at the northwest corner of the church collapsed in 1778.
The church includes a nave with an added north aisle, a chancel, and a 16th-century porch. The late 12th-century south doorway features a two-centred arch with ringed shafts that support a roll-moulded outer order and a hood-mould adorned with carved medallions. The door retains some medieval ironwork. The north aisle has perpendicular tracery, including one 19th-century plate traceried window in the east wall. The 13th-century north arcade was heightened in the 15th century when a clearstorey and arch-braced roof were added. The north aisle was later heightened, with its contemporary roof partially obscuring the clearstorey windows. There is a blocked late 12th-century tower arch and a restored 15th-century chancel roof.
Inside, there are three medieval poppy heads on later bench ends, and a 16th-century linenfold panelled pulpit with tracery, supported on turned baluster shafts and fitted with an hourglass stand. The font, dating from around 1200, is square with faintly recessed two-centred arches and is supported on shafts.
