Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church originating from the 14th and 15th centuries, though it underwent significant restoration in the 19th century. It is constructed of flint with brick and limestone dressings, and features slate roofs over the nave and chancel. The church includes a tall square west tower, nave, chancel, south porch, and a chapel on the north side of the chancel.

The west tower is notable for its staged angle buttresses, which rise to hexagonal pinnacles adorned with seated figures of evangelists. The bell openings are designed with 'Y' tracery, and there is a later parapet featuring flushwork panels. Small cusped belfry openings are present on the southeast and southwest sides, and a stair turret is located in the northeast angle of the tower. The tower also has a three-light west window, while the windows in the nave and chancel have been largely restored, including two three-light windows with cusped 'Y' tracery.

Staged buttresses divide the bays of the nave, which has a string course at the cill level. Inside the south porch, there is a well-crafted angle-stoup. The priest's door on the south side of the chancel has a simple hollow-chamfered surround. The nave is wide and features a 19th-century roof with arch-braced collars and wall-posts. The tower arch is supported by demi-octagonal pilasters with castellated capitals, and the angle buttresses of the tower intrude into the nave.

There is an early 17th-century wall monument without an inscription on the west wall of the tower, alongside a fine 17th-century monument to Thomas Richardson located on the south wall of the chancel.
