Description
The Honingham and East Tuddenham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919. It is located on a triangular green at the north entrance of the village, at the junction of The Street and Hall Drive in Honingham, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently placed beneath a tree on the green and is enclosed by a small fence.
The structure features a triangular-headed wooden triptych shrine with double wooden doors. When opened, the doors reveal a calvary with a silver-coloured effigy of Christ on a wooden cross. The entire shrine is supported on "legs" and stands on a concrete platform base. At the top, there is a simple canopy covered with a copper-based metal. The shrine includes painted lettering both inside and outside.
The inscriptions on the memorial read as follows: on the pediment, "IN MEMORY OF CURLY"; on the left door, "HONINGHAM ROLL OF HONOUR" followed by names; on the right door, "E. TUDDENHAM ROLL OF HONOUR" followed by names; at the centre top, "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS"; at the centre bottom, "THE HEROIC DEAD"; and on the base, "SO HE PASSED OVER AND ALL THE TRUMPETS SOUNDED FOR HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE."
