Description

West Lodge is a former farmhouse dating from around 1600, with later additions. The date 1743 is noted on the facade hoppers. The building is constructed of brick and features pantiled and slate roofs. It has an L-plan layout, with a lobby entrance and a central axial stack in the main wing, as well as a gable end stack on the subsidiary wing. The main facade, which dates from 1743 and the early 19th century, is two storeys tall with attics and a cellar beneath the northern half. Originally arranged with five bays in 1743, it was later modified to three bays with the insertion of large arched tripartite sash windows in the 19th century. The entrance features a two-leaf front door with a rusticated skewback arch and a flat hood supported by carved consoles. There is one surviving central window opening from 1743 with a raised brick surround, along with two dormer windows that have moulded pediments and casements with leaded lights. The other elevations display varied 19th and 20th-century fenestration, but retain some 17th-century moulded brick pediments.

A single-storey 19th-century extension has a saw tooth cornice that was heightened later in the century. Inside, there is an original fireplace in the subsidiary wing with chamfered stone jambs and a wooden lintel. The principal beams feature elaborate barred and double jewelled stops, with one surviving beam on the first floor of the main wing displaying ogee stops. The original roofs include butt-purlins, collars, and ties, and there is an original cellar entrance at the rear of the main wing. A late 17th-century two-ramp staircase features tapered and carved balusters, along with a contemporary panelled cellar door. The main wing was refurbished in 1743, which included a barrel-vaulted tunnel through the stack, as well as new fireplaces and panelling.
